April 24, 1800 - President John Adams approves legislation to appropriate $5,000 to purchase “such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress,” thus establishing The Library of Congress!

The first library in Queens was organized in 1858 in Flushing on a subscription basis. Incorporated in 1869, it became a free circulation library in 1884. Check out this postcard of the former Queens Borough Public Library branch at Flushing in 1912.
